  • Actress Mira Sorvino could have landed a role in Lord of the Rings but director Peter Jackson was told she was

"What type of person just hangs up on you like that".

Another day, another story accusing Harvey Weinstein of being a awful human being, as director Peter Jackson recently claimed that Weinstein actively blocked Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino from joining the Lord of the Rings cast. Getting heated now. He then grabs me tighter and says 'why don't we go outside and talk about this.' That was all I needed to hear. "This was probably in 1998", Jackson said.

"At the time, we had no reason to question what these guys were telling us ― but in hindsight, I realize that this was very likely the Miramax smear campaign in full swing", Jackson told the New Zealand news site Stuff.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy was initially in development with Weinstein's Miramax company, before being passed to New Line Cinema. Weinstein himself has denied "any allegations of non-consensual sex", but said when the knews broke that "the way I've behaved with colleagues in the past has caused a lot of pain, and I sincerely apologize for it".

The statement read, "Aspects of Harvey's denial are insincere". He is basically saying that "this blacklisting couldn't be true because New Line cast the movie". That's a deflection from the truth. Peter Jackson came forward late last week to reveal that the Weinstein Brothers told Jackson not to cast them in the Lord of the Rings franchise because they were "difficult to work with".

"Amongst the many names raised, Fran [Walsh] and I expressed our enthusiasm for Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino".

"Miramax had flown Ashley to NY for casting discussions and to meet the production team for "Good Will Hunting".

Both actresses have claimed the media mogul sexually harassed them.

Judd and Sorvino had earlier claimed they had lost out on films due to Weinstein.

"Just seeing this after I awoke, I burst out crying".

As for Sorvino, the statement explains that they did work together, on Guillermo Del Toro's "Mimic", and implies that Weinstein would not attempt to derail her career because she was, at the time, dating Quentin Tarantino, one of the company's most high-profile directors.

Judd and Sorvino both responded on Twitter, thanking Jackson for finally speaking out.
