The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, Disney's gritty reimagining of the classic holiday ballet (and weird German fairytale), finally has a trailer.

Prussian author E. T. A. Hoffmann wrote the novella The Nutcracker and the Mouse King in 1816.

The Nutcracker and the Four Realms was directed by Lasse Hallström (A Dog's Purpose, The Hundred-Foot Journey) from a script by Ashleigh Powell.

The story follows Clara (Foy) whose only wish is to get hold of a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift from her late mother. Set to the familiar "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy", which has been given something of a dramatic remix, the film looks to be taking the classic Nutcracker story and giving it a treatment that partially recalls Tim Burton's fantasy world from Alice in Wonderland. There may be a greater goal behind Clara's fantastic adventure that could determine the fate of the four realms. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer's (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key-which promptly disappears into a odd and mysterious parallel world. Richard E. Grant and ballet stars Misty Copeland and Sergei Polunin also feature in the cast. There she finds the Sugar Plum Princess, played by Keira Knightley, and a tyrant called Mother Ginger, played by Helen Mirren, and her gang of mice, who hold the key to Clara's escape. Together, Clare and Phillip venture into the Fourth Realm, ruled by a terrifying Mother Ginger (Mirren), in order to find Clara's key and bring peace to the realms.
