Elon Musk tweeted that Tesla cars will receive an update to their map and navigation systems in early 2018.

But if Musk has left any room for doubt, it is now gone with a striking photo he posted to Instagram on Friday afternoon. The SpaceX CEO previously said that he'd be launching exactly that on the spaceship, but then suggested he was joking - before the whole thing was confirmed again by SpaceX, and now made really official via this post. "Payload will be my midnight cherry Tesla Roadster playing Space Oddity", Musk wrote on Twitter.

SpaceX's 70-meter-high reusable rocket comprises three booster cores compared to the single one used by its current Falcon 9 rocket, with each core containing nine Merlin engines.

Photos shared on Instagram show the Tesla Roadster being prepped for the Falcon Heavy rocket.

Musk demanded to be taken seriously prior to releasing the crucial photo of that missing part, though.

The Falcon Heavy's two side-mounted boosters and central core are created to be reusable, flying back to Earth to land on land- and sea-based platforms. And in 2010, he launched a wheel of cheese into orbit during the maiden voyage of Dragon, a spaceship built by SpaceX.

The 229.6-foot-tall Falcon Heavy will be able to lift 140,660 pounds to low-Earth orbit.

"Red vehicle for a red planet", Musk replied to a Twitter user in early December. He claims that the rocket will be in deep space for a billion years if it doesn't blow up on ascent - and given the success that SpaceX had lately, a successful launch seems likely. Joy Dunn, an engineer at the company, tweeted on December 1 that "this is legit and of course there will be cameras!"

Musk also hinted that more software updates might be on the way.
