"He admitted that Mr Green had been sacked because he had "lied", dropping the pretence that he had been "asked to resign" after what were called "misleading" statements".

Jeremy Hunt said the dismissal - announced late last night, in an exchange of letters - was further evidence of the Prime Minister's ability to take "very hard decisions". He was found to be in breach of the ministerial code.

Theresa May's ruthless sacking of her close ally Damian Green will convince people she he is the right person "to lead the country", a Cabinet colleague claims.

Green was a vital political ally who acted as a de facto deputy prime minister and supported May in her hard Brexit negotiations. Hunt said he was "she she didn't want him to go" and would have fired him with a "heavy heart".

He said: "I think that is clear sadly from the letter that were exchanged but I think that doesn't mean that it isn't a very, very sad moment for us who are colleagues of Damian who know what a capable minister he was, how committed he was throughout his whole career to the most vulnerable people in society".

"Leadership is lonely. And despite the most incredible pressure over the last four months she has actually carried on and taken some very big decisions", he added.

In his resignation letter, from his post as First Secretary of State, he continued to deny "unfounded and deeply hurtful" claims that he downloaded or viewed the material.

May said she asked Green for his resignation after the investigation concluded he had not been open about the matter.

Maltby said Green had "fleetingly" touched her knee during a meeting in a pub and later sent a suggestive text after a picture of her wearing a corset appeared in a newspaper.

Labour said Green's sacking leaves May "further weakened" while the Liberal Democrats said the Government was "barely holding itself together".
