  • USF scores late TD, wins wild Birmingham Bowl over Texas Tech

The Bulls rank 28th in yards allowed, 57th in passing yards allowed, 22nd in rushing yards allowed, and 36th in points allowed (22.5). Instead, the Red Raiders finish an up-and-down season at 6-7.

The Texas Tech stop preserved a seven-point advantage, but the battle of field position would still end up helping USF.

South Florida answered as Flowers completed a 17-yard pass to Darnell Salomon to knot things up at 17-17 by the 8:34 mark. Shimonek started the first 11 games of the season for Texas Tech before being benched in the team's regular season finale against Texas. They also made Flowers uncomfortable in the pocket, as the senior quarterback missed two would-be touchdowns early in the game.

The risque Birmingham Bowl trophy, replete with its sculpture of a bare-bottomed Roman god. Tech had 248 yards at the half with Shimonek completing 15-of-30 passes for 187 yards, with a touchdown and two interceptions, but was sacked three times in the opening half.

USF tied it up late in the second quarter, after Quinton Flowers hooked up with Tyre McCants on the 21 yard touchdown.

But the Red Raiders left Flowers and the Bulls too much time to strike back, and strike back they most certainly did.

Texas Tech outgained South Florida, 356-320, in total yards but both teams turned the ball over twice and committed an absurd amount of penalties. Texas Tech outscored USF 14-7 in the third quarter, with a Flowers touchdown pass to Damel Solomon being sandwiched in between a Shimonek scoring throw to Dylan Cantrell and a Tre King four-yard touchdown run.

Texas Tech went three-and-out on the ensuing drive but linebacker Kolin Hill recovered a fumble for the Red Raiders on the first play of South Florida's next possession.

His final two touchdowns were his most clutch, however.

A play into USF's next drive, Flowers threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Scantling to put USF up, 31-27, over Tech with 4:26 left in the game.

Two of Texas Tech's best weapons were on full display against South Florida.

Texas Tech took a 27-24 lead with just over five minutes to play with a 33-yard field goal by Clayton Hatfield, setting the stage for USF quarterback Quinton Flowers to try and deliver some last-minute heroics in his final college football game.

Shimonek took Texas Tech across midfield in the final seconds but his desperation pass on the run was well short of the end zone.
