Facebook denies linking Aadhaar with user account, clears rumours in blog post

  • Facebook has clarified that its recent “Aadhaar prompt” was not meant to collect users’ data

A statement by Facebook said, "This is a small test where we provide additional language when people sign up for an account to say that using the name on their Aadhaar card makes it easier for friends to recognise them".

You could find lots of posts talking about Facebook and Aadhaar linking. According to Facebook, this is an optional prompt and not a mandatory one. Social network giant Facebook now wants users to use their names as listed in their Aadhaar cards while creating new accounts. In the screenshot Facebook is seen asking the user his/her first and last name, which should be same as the one on the user's Aadhaar card.

The test, which was obviously constrained to Facebook's mobile site, provoked new clients to use "name as per Aadhaar" to make it 'easier for friends to recognise you.' The test has now been finished up, as indicated by Facebook and the organization as of now have no plans to move this test out further. So my guess is by using the term the name as per your Aadhaar card, Facebook is trying to emphasise that is what it means by real name. Also, this is not a far-fetched conclusion to say that Facebook can use Aadhaar verification to get rid of fake profiles.

The Government of India has made it mandatory for its citizens to link their Aadhaar card with bank accounts, PAN, insurance policies, small savings schemes like PPF and NSC, mutual fund investments and social security schemes to make it the most authentic identity proof. You can still use any random name and create a new account.

Earlier, several users on Reddit and Twitter posted messages about Facebook's new feature.

It is noteworthy that Facebook is not asking for Aadhaar number, but just the name as per Aadhaar card. Then again, Facebook isn't exactly known for just winging it, so there's a possibility that this could be a portent of tighter Aadhaar integration with the social networking portal. While the company's response does clarify the situation, it's quite clear that Facebook, as always, is missing the whole point of the uproar.
