  • Football legend George Weah wins Liberian presidential election

Liberia's National Elections Commission was expected to begin releasing provisional results Wednesday from the West African nation's presidential runoff as a football star and the vice president compete to replace Africa's first female head of state.

His opponent Joseph Boakai was well behind with 38.5% of the vote.

The victor of the election will replace Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Africa's first democratically elected president Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

The vote was delayed for seven weeks due to legal challenges lodged by Boakai's Unity Party against the electoral commission over the conduct of the first round of voting.

Weah alleges that electoral fraud cost him the presidency in 2005 and the vice-presidency in 2011.

Either of Mr. Boakai and ex-footballer George Weah will be declared president-elect after the announcement of the results.

Weah retired from professional football in 2003 and soon became involved in politics when he formed the Congress of Democratic Change in 2005.

President Akufo-Addo has congratulated Liberia's president-elect, George Weah.

After a first vote that was too close to call, Weah and Boakai are awaiting the results from the run-off.

More than two million people were eligible to cast their ballots in the nation of 4.6 million people.

Taylor is serving his 50-year prison sentence in the United Kingdom for war crimes related to the conflict in neighbouring Sierra Leone.

His CDC party contested those results but has refrained so far this time, though after voting on Tuesday, Weah warned that "what happened in 2005 and 2011 can not be repeated".

On Tuesday polling stations displayed voter lists as a mark of transparency.
