  • Dangerously cold temperatures return this weekend

WIND CHILL WARNING/ADVISORY is in effect late tonight through Tuesday morning.

These cold wind chills will cause frost bite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin.

"The Wind Chill Advisory continues through noon (Sunday) for the Blue Ridge Mountains and through 6 pm for the Allegheny Highlands".

The cold will permeate New Year's Day. Temperatures overnight will fall below zero with wind chills dropping to -15º.

Temperature-wise, the weather service predicted Topeka would see a high of 6 degrees Sunday, a low of minus 9 Sunday night, a high of 9 on Monday and a low of minus 7 Monday night. The big story will be the cold, with lows in the single digits to teens below zero, with a northwest wind 5-10 miles per hour knocking wind chills from -20 to -30.

Highs will stay in the low teens Monday before we warm back into the 20s on Tuesday. Frostbite can occur quickly and even hypothermia or death if precautions are not taken, the weather service said. Skies should clear partially on Monday night for some.

Tue: High: 23 Low: 0 Sunny. Highs through the New Year for most will not top 0° (Fahrenheit).

Wed: High: 32 Low: 13 Sunny. Decreasing cloud cover, becoming partly cloudy will allow for additional cooling, with lows 5 to 15 below zero.

Tonight: Partly cloudy. Wind: NE 10-15; gusty.
