  • NYC Mayor says 12 people died in Bronx fire

Decorated Army National Guard soldier, Emmanuel Mensah was among the 12 victims in Thursday night's deadly New York City apartment fire.

NYC Mayor Di Blasio held a press conference early Friday where he stated that the deadly fire was likely accidental.

Police say on Saturday that five men and a teenage girl also perished in the fire that killed a dozen people. But the flames moved so fast that many never made it out of their apartments.

The cause remained under investigation.

The dead included a child around a year old, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said during a briefing outside the building.

CNN reports that the fire was started when a 3-year-old boy was playing with burners on a kitchen stove. Besides the 12 dead, others are reported hospitalized, including four in critical condition. Diallo says it took him a moment to realize what was happening.

Some families in the apartment building are part of the parish so he rushed to the location "as soon as I could get there", he said.

The city's fire commissioner said the blaze began on the first floor of the five-story building and spread quickly. He said he was forced to run out barefoot, wearing only a bathrobe.

A relative tells The New York Times that Emmanuel Mensah had rescued a number of people then went back into the burning building, where he died of smoke inhalation.

About 170 firefighters fought the fire and rescued fleeing tenants, working in temperatures in the teens.

Mayor de Blasio told CNN on Friday, "This is a awful tragedy in the middle of the holidays". Excluding the September 11 attacks, it was the worst fire in the city since 87 people were killed at a social club fire in the Bronx in 1990. The Fire Department of NY said earlier that 15 people were seriously injured in the fire near the Bronx Zoo Thursday night.
