The suspect is Tyler Barriss, 25, of Los Angeles, according to Officer Mike Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department.
Barriss was arrested in 2015 for calling in fake bomb threats to CNN affiliate KABC, Glendale Police Sergeant Victor Jackson told CNN.
Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department records show he is being held without bond.
Thursday's incident began around 6:18 p.m. "I might just set it on fire.in a little bit, I might".
"That was the information we were working off of", he said, explaining that officers went to the house ready for a hostage situation and they "got into position".
The deceased man, who was unarmed, has been identified as 28-year-old Andrew Finch.
The man's family said he was not involved in online gaming.
Livingston did not say if the 28-year-old man had a gun.
"The irresponsible actions of a prankster put people's lives at risk", Livingston said. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died. The quick and free trick, using websites and apps, makes a call appear to the 911 operator as though it is coming from inside someone's house.
Police have not yet released the identity of the man killed in the incident. A report from The Wichita Eagle suggested two gamers were allegedly arguing over a Call of Duty wager match-one of the gamers provided Finch's address instead of his own when his opponent threatened to swat him.
His mother, Lisa Finch, told reporters "that cop murdered my son over a false report in the first place".
"He doesn't play video games", Finch said.
"There were several commands given" by police, Livingston said. A man who answered the door was killed in an officer-involved shooting. They were then transported downtown and interviewed by Wichita police officers.
Livingston, the deputy police chief, said investigators believe the prank call was a case of "swatting", in which a 911 caller intends to deceive law enforcement about an alleged serious emergency.
Mr Livingston called the incident "tragic and senseless".
Local and federal authorities are searching for the caller who is responsible for the deadly standoff, Livingston said. Livingston says that when Finch reached toward his waistband, an officer feared he had a gun and shot him. The officer is on paid leave.
While there's no confirmation yet that Barriss is "SWauTistic", the Twitter user who claimed to be one of the Call of Duty players and admitted to Krebs On Security's Brian Krebs that he was the one who made the call, the LA Times has found that Barriss has a history of such pranks. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family as well as with the officer".
The LA Times while quoting the Long Beach police said that they responded to the location amid reporters of a shooter at large. Police are now investigating a shooting at a business in Bixby Knolls that left multiple people injured.
