"Multiple U.S. citizens" were killed in a charter plane crash in Guancaste, Costa Rica, according to the U.S. State Department.

Costa Rican authorities say those who died in the plane crash include 10 USA citizens and two local residents.

"The government vows to do everything necessary to help the victims' family members in whatever they need in this hard moment and sends them the solidarity of all the Costa Rican people", Solis said. It took place in the mountainous area of Punta Islita, which is popular with tourists, in the province of Guanacaste, about 140 miles west of the capital of San José. According to Costa Rican authorities, 10 of those passengers were United States citizens. The spokesperson would not confirm the nationalities of those on board. Authorities did not immediately release the names of the victims.

Enio Cubillo, director of Costa Rica Civil Aviation, said at a news conference that the Nature Air pilot, Juan Manuel Retana, was very experienced. "Our heart sank, we got some pain in our stomachs", Dawn Wolfe told ABC News.

"It is a private plane with 10 foreign passengers and two local crew members", a separate security ministry statement said.
