Jack Del Rio Firing Likely Paves the Way for Jon Gruden

"I hope I'm a candidate", Gruden said.

"My understanding is they're interviewing candidates this week and they're going to let everybody know sometime early next week or whenever they make their decision", Gruden told the paper.

The Oakland Raiders are expected to hire Jon Gruden as head coach.

Jon Gruden coached in Oakland for four good years, leading the Raiders to four consecutive.500-or-better seasons, including two playoff appearances and an AFC Championship.

The Daily News reported if Gruden does go to Oakland he might try to recruit Jets offensive coordinator John Morton to go with him and that NY will not stand in his way. The Raiders seem more likely to keep him around for one more year, not only because they gave him a four-year extension but also to try and prove that this year's disappointment wasn't the norm. He then went on to win the Super Bowl with the Bucs the very next year, beating Oakland in the process. However, Gruden holds a career coaching record of 95-81. ESPN still has one last National Football League game to broadcast this season, Saturday afternoon's wild-card clash between the Tennessee Titans and Kansas City Chiefs.

Of course, that means current head coach Jack Del Rio would probably be out of a job.

Jon Gruden has yet to be hired by the Oakland Raiders.

The Raiders will be required to comply with the "Rooney Rule" and interview at least one minority candidate or otherwise face discipline from the NFL.

So why, considering how obvious the match is, is Gruden being coy about talk of his inevitable assumption of the Oakland head coaching job?

Tom Flores was the first Hispanic coach to win a Super Bowl and the team also hired Hue Jackson as coach in 2011 and now employs Reggie McKenzie as general manager.

So, is Gruden the next man up for the Raiders?
