Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), the longest-serving Republican in the Senate and an influential member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said on Tuesday that he plans to retire at the end of his term.

"Every good fighter knows when to hang up the gloves", said 83-year-old Mr Hatch. "And for me, that time is soon approaching", Hatch said in a statement. But Hatch, who emerged as one of the presidents most avid loyalists in the Senate, made a decision to retire after discussing the matter with his family over the holidays. He chairs the powerful Senate Finance Committee and was a major force in getting a tax overhaul through Congress and signed into law in December.

If Hatch had opted to stay in the Senate, he could have faced a formidable challenge from a crop of ambitious Utah Republicans. He's the longest-serving Republican senator in USA history.

Romney maintains residence in Utah and was the president and CEO of the Salt Lake City Olympic Committee before going on to serve as governor of MA and challenge Barack Obama as the Republican nominee in the 2012 presidential election.

Mr. Romney intends to make his intentions known in a matter of weeks, according to an adviser who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Hatch is the second-longest serving current US senator, serving for more than 40 years.

Mr. Romney repeatedly assailed the president during the 2016 campaign, calling Mr. Trump "a fraud", and Mr. Trump returned the favor, stating that Mr. Romney "choked like a dog" in the 2012 race. "Ann and I wish Senator Orrin Hatch and his loving wife Elaine all the best in their future endeavors".

Just imagine what Bannon might say if Romney actually becomes a candidate for office.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Tuesday she had not discussed Romney's potential candidacy with Trump and could not say whether the president would support him. "You went to France to be a missionary while guys were dying in rice paddies in Vietnam". He sought the Republican nomination for president, saying he had more experience in Washington than his opponents and that he could work with Democrats.

Hatch frequently wrote religious songs and recorded music in his spare time as a way to relax from the stresses of life in Washington.
