The NFL and NFL Players Association are conducting a joint review into how the Carolina Panthers handled the concussion protocol as it related to a fourth-quarter hit on quarterback Cam Newton in Sunday's NFC playoff loss at New Orleans.

The NFL has issued out a few hefty fines to teams for violations of the concussion protocol as the Seattle Seahawks were fined $100,000 for failing to test quarterback Russell Wilson in Week 10.

The team soon indicated he'd been cleared of a concussion.

Two weeks after the National Football League had revised its concussion protocol, it was apparently broken on the big stage.

Newton took a shot to the head from Saints defensive tackle David Onyemata midway through the fourth quarter.

Newton and coach Ron Rivera both said after the game, which the Panthers lost 31-26, that the player was checked over after he was hit in the eye, not because of a concussion.

The NFL said it was in contact with the Panthers medical staff.

According to Fox Sports' Chris Myers on the broadcast, Newton's visor poked him in the eye, a unusual explanation following a crushing blow. He was replaced the next play, but as he made his way off the sideline he stubbled and needed help to get back up off the field.

"We did everything the right way", Hurney said (per the Charlotte Observer).
