  • Skype Private Conversations end-to-end encryption arrives for Insiders

Microsoft has finally acknowledged that it needed to address this gap, and today the company is introducing end-to-end encrypted Skype messages and audio calls for Skype Insiders on Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS and Android.

Microsoft and Signal have teamed up to make Skype conversations as private as possible. For now, all of these conversations must be one-to-one, as no group messages are allowed.

Skype Insiders can navigate to the Compose menu and select "New Private Conversation" to get started. Assuming this is true since both partners are regarding it as a new "Private Conversations" feature instead of giving complete blanket coverage. If they do not accept before then, the invite will expire, and you will need to send another one.

This means that you will have to enter into the "Private Conversations" mode with whomever you want to have an encrypted conversation with. Thus, Skype's implementation is similar to what Facebook Messenger uses, which has dedicated Secret Conversations you can set up for this goal. Now these conversations are limited to two people at a time.

You will only be able to start private chats with other Skype Insiders running the latest version of the app during the preview. You can't edit messages or forward files in this mode, only emoticons, files, and audio messages are available to send.

Private Conversations are specific to a device.

Redmond has been a laggard in locking down Skype as a truly end-to-end encrypted comms system - end-to-end meaning only the people talking to each other can decrypt the chatter, leaving Microsoft and whoever may be eavesdropping on the connections in the dark.

Skype denied the claims in a carefully worded memo, saying the changes were all about improving the quality of service and making it easier to roll out new applications.
