  • Amazon To Remove Ads From Prime Exclusive Smartphones With Update

However, because Amazon doesn't plan to serve up ads any longer, Phonescooper has claimed Amazon will raise the cost of all Prime Exclusive phones by $20 starting 7 February.

Amazon's Prime Exclusive Program launched in 2016 with the Motorola Moto G and the BLU R1 HD, both of which had lock screen ads. The retailer states that the change is meant to make the user experience better, by letting owners use the increasingly more prevalent fingerprint readers and unlocking features that bypass the lock screen. An update will be available through the Android device's settings and/or in notifications starting this week with the removal of lockscreen offers and ads. For those devices already out in the world, updates will start rolling out next week that remove the ads.

Thanks to facial recognition and fingerprint sensors, most people don't really look at their lock screens anymore. Here's the full statement. As smartphone technology has evolved, we also want to evolve the Prime Exclusive Phone experience to ensure customers can easily use features such as the phone's mobile unlock technologies like facial recognition and fingerprint sensors, as well as be able to personalize device lockscreens with photos or wallpapers. The phones are sold unlocked and at a discount, but customers had the option to remove the lockscreen ads with an additional payment. In exchange, customers get a decent discount on Android phones from well-known manufacturers, provided you're a member of the $99/year Amazon Prime program. Prime members will still enjoy a single sign-on experience, have access to pre-installed Amazon apps and services, take advantage of free unlimited photo storage through Prime Photos, and more. The reason Amazon's done this is likely different from what you'd expect. There will also be a Special Offers widget on the home screen.

Apparently, the bloatware will remain but can be uninstalled or hidden if you don't use it. As a result of all this, Amazon has had to re-think its phone program.
