  • Barnaby Joyce faces monumental risk after baby news

Ms Campion was Mr Joyce's press secretary before being moved into a more senior position in another ministerial office when Mr Joyce was forced to resign from Parliament after discovering he was a dual national.

The deputy prime minister has so far refused to comment on the alleged affair, and Sky News host Samantha Maiden said on Wednesday that Champion - a former News Corp journalist - had repeatedly denied the affair when asked by her former colleagues.

Ms Joyce said she was particularly hurt after inviting Ms Campion into her home and her life throughout the months she was employed by her husband, only to have the media adviser strike up the relationship behind her back.

"Everybody is trying to second guess what is a deeply private matter and I'm not going to do that".

"I'll say upfront that one of the greatest failures in my life was the end of my marriage", he told the host. "I can't fathom why a pregnant lady walking across the road deserves a front page".

Outside of describing the end of his marriage as "one of the greatest failures of his life", the bulk of the interview is Joyce reiterating that he doesn't believe that any of his (or anyone's) private life should be made public and insisting that there was no impropriety as it relates to his spending taxpayer funds.

A friend of the Deputy Prime Minister said the pregnancy was shrouded in secrecy because he was concerned about the well-being of his daughters. "I don't think it would be right for any other politician".

"I'm not going to go into all the iterations of a private relationship, and there's nothing beyond the consensual", he replied.

Mr Joyce replied that his marriage breakup did not make him "terribly unusual".

"I am not for one minute saying that that is an admirable trait".

And while I can see merit in the argument that there is much hypocrisy in Mr Joyce's conduct given his conservative, family focused, anti-same sex marriage views, I also think the story plays in to our society's love of gossip. "I'm not proud of it but that is, you know, in essence the humanity of who we are".

'I But I'm not going to start saying "Well therefore, I'm gonna say that because I failed, I'm going to completely change my views and definition". I care that he had an affair with an employee.

"It is such a traumatic thing, ending a marriage", she said.

'The situation is devastating, for my girls who are affected by the family breakdown and for me as a wife of 24 years who placed my own career on hold to support Barnaby through his political life, ' she said, The Daily Telegraph reported.

She added: 'Naturally we feel deceived and hurt by the actions of Barnaby and the staff member involved'.

Before working in Politics Vikki Campion worked as a journalist and deputy chief of staff of The Daily Telegraph.

She said journalists who missed the story or did not publish it were the same ones now arguing it was not in the public interest.
