  • Video: Alexa Expertly Trolls Tom Brady Over Patriots' Garoppolo Trade

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network reports that San Francisco and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo have agreed to a five-year, $137.5 million contract that is the biggest in NFL history in terms of average salary per year.

If and when that deal gets done, Garoppolo's playoff bonus will seem a pittance in comparison. They knew he was the real deal. Cousins could not actually be traded under that scenario until he signed the franchise tag.

Garoppolo has won all seven games he has started in his National Football League career, including two with the Patriots previous year while Brady served his Deflategate suspension.

Jimmy Garoppolo was the New England Patriots backup quarterback. Both coming while Tom Brady served a four-game suspension in 2016 for the infamous "DeflateGate" scandal. Garoppolo completed 70 per cent of his passes and led the team on a last-minute drive that ended with a game-winning field goal.

The 49ers were expected to have more than $100 million in salary-cap space for 2018 and it will be interesting to see how Garoppolo's deal is structured.

New England will in all likelihood will be drafting Brady's successor in this coming draft, but it only has five picks as of now (not including compensation picks).

Garoppolo's $27.5 million annual earnings - after just seven pro starts under enter - sets the floor for Cousins and his camp as they haggle with suitors pining after the former Redskins starter. With him starting, they went undefeated.

But Garoppolo likely won't be the highest paid quarterback for long. At the time of the trade it could have been slightly argued that he was only worth a second-rounder, but after the commitment the 49ers gave him Thursday, there's no debate anymore. Lynch's success in his first draft as the 49ers general manager was remarkable but may have given this front office unrealistic expectations. Their record was 0-8, they couldn't protect their quarterbacks and their No. 1 receiver, Pierre Garcon, was out for the season with a broken neck. Garoppolo - in the 49ers' estimation - fits the bill. And there was no guarantee he wanted to tie his future to their franchise.

During this stretch of games, Garoppolo looked extremely competent under center as the vocal leader of the offense, elevating his teammates play to another level. He sat on the bench and learned the playbook for a month while the 49ers continued to struggle.

Needless to say, Garoppolo is going to have to figure out what to do with his new-found wealth.

But he didn't need talent around him.

The quarterback finished with 1,560 passing yards and seven touchdowns in six games for a 96.2 quarterback rating.
