The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the Syria war through activists on the ground, said the airstrike targeted positions of the Syrian army and its allies in the area of Jamraya, northwest of Damascus, which is home to a government research center and was also hit in December.

In a statement Saturday, the ministry said "of particular concern is the danger of escalation of tension within and around de-escalation zones in, the creation of which has become an important factor in reducing violence on Syrian soil".

"We urge all the involved parties to exercise restraint and avoid any steps that could lead to the aggravation of the situation".

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is expected to visit the region in the coming week to discuss Syria and other issues, and is scheduled to visit Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and other countries.

"It is absolutely unacceptable to create threats to the lives and security of Russian soldiers that are in the Syrian Arab Republic on the invitation of the legal government to assist in the fight against terrorism", it added.

Iran's involvement in Syria in support of President Bashar Assad in a almost seven-year-old civil war - including the deployment of Iran-backed forces near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights - has alarmed Israel, which has said it would counter any threat.

According to Bar, the last time Israeli pilots delivered such powerful strikes on Syrian air defense batteries was in 1982 during a campaign in Lebanon against Palestinian armed groups.

Israeli planes then struck an Iranian installation in Syria from which, the Israeli military said, the unmanned aircraft had been operated.

Bar also expressed satisfaction that, for the first time, Israel had captured an Iranian drone.

An Israeli F-16 fighter jet has been shot down by Syrian military while targeting what it called Iranian sites responsible for launching a drone into occupied Golan Heights.

The incident in and of itself is a serious event and raises questions as to whether the drone was used as bait by the Iranians to drag Israeli jets into Syria, whose air defenses were laying in wait for them.

The senior commander said the Zionist regime has been created by the USA and the United Kingdom, adding the Islamic Republic of Iran began to inflict heavy blows on the U.S. since early years of the Islamic Revolution.

Iran, along with Russian Federation - which had helped prop up the Assad government - denied that any of its drones had entered Israeli air space or that they had any role in shooting down the Israeli jet.

In response, Syria shot down more than one Israeli fighter jets, according the official.

Israel has conducted dozens of strikes inside Syrian borders to defend what it calls its red lines, and to prevent what it says is Iran's proxy Hezbollah - fighting alongside the Syrian regime - from acquiring advanced weaponry.

Later, the Israeli army press service informed that an Israeli F-16 jet had crashed in the north of the country; but its pilots had ejected safely.

A second pilot was lightly injured while abandoning the aircraft.

Meanwhile, reports an errant anti-aircraft missile "fired by the Israeli enemy" fell in a Lebanese citrus grove.
