Health Officials: 22 more die from flu in South Carolina

Even in Maryland, some deaths have been reported in connection with the virus. "This one arrived early and continues to spread, leading many people throughout the Commonwealth to get sick". But experts have wondered whether low vaccine effectiveness is another reason for the surprisingly severe season hitting the United States this winter.

Until last week, the dominant flu virus in Arkansas was H3N2, a type A virus that usually causes more illness than other viruses and mutates faster, making vaccines less effective against it. Seriously ill patients are advised to call a doctor before deciding whether to go to the emergency room. In general, viruses in the influenza B family cause less serious illness than those in the A group. Department officials believe New Brunswick's high numbers are because of the longer flu season, and co-circulation of both strains. "Each year we work hard to predict which strains will be circulating", she told a news conference.

The number of Minnesotans hospitalized with flu symptoms also set a record - 4,300 - the highest since the Minnesota Health Department began tracking them in 2008.

Although the vaccine may not stop the flu, it will bolster the body's immune response against the virus, tempering its effects. "Influenza-related illness is identified and responded to using best practices". Childhood deaths have reached about 170 in a season.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Louisiana Department of Health recommend a yearly flu shot for everyone over six months of age who does not have a complicating condition, such as a prior allergic reaction to the flu shot.

"Louisiana is continuing to see widespread flu activity in this, particularly severe flu season". States are not required to report adult flu deaths. Nationwide, there have been at least 63 pediatric flu-related deaths since October 1. According to the CDC the benefits, on the other hand, include a substantially reduced risk of catching the flu as well as reducing the severity of the flu if you contract it, which is especially important this season given the nationwide Tamiflu shortage.

At a briefing for reporters, Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar likened getting a flu shot to wearing a seat belt, "a sensible precaution" that Americans should take. He said he, his wife and two children have all been vaccinated.

Tina Tan, an internist who is state epidemiologist for the New Jersey Department of Health, said that no vaccine is ideal and this one is still helping some people.

With almost every state hit hard by the flu this season, New Jersey residents are suffering, too. "There is a vaccine specific for people who are older that gives you a higher dose".
