A series of weather warnings remain in place for the United Kingdom for snow, ice and wind today however as the Met Office warned of widespread heavy snow and very strong easterly winds in affected areas.

Yellow snow warnings remain in place for most of Thursday for vast swathes of southern, central and northern England as well as Northern Ireland and Wales.

The Met Office chief forecaster said: "Frequent and often heavy snow showers are expected to continue through Thursday and overnight into Friday morning with further significant accumulations likely".

"Long delays and cancellations of public transport seem highly likely". "Whilst initially the snow will be patchy in nature, it will turn heavier and more persistent through the afternoon and evening and it will become very windy".

"Some rural communities might be cut off for several days".

It also warned of "long interruptions to power supplies and other services".

Tweets from Met √Čireann's official weather forecasting partner in Britain confirm the damage Storm Emma and the Beast from the East are going to bring to Ireland. "The snow will be accompanied by very strong easterly winds leading to blizzards and considerable drifting", the Met Office said.

It is expected that the mercury could plummet to minus 15C by midweek where there is snow on the ground, rivalling temperatures forecast for parts of northern Norway and Iceland.

The red warning for the south-west follows a similar one issued for Scotland, which has so far borne the brunt of the extreme weather so far.

Schools and universities were closed on Wednesday and to stay closed on Thursday while transport networks shut down on Wednesday afternoon.

Motorists have been warned to take extra care on the roads due to the snowy conditions, after four people died in auto crashes amid the heavy snow.

A 60-year-old man who died after being pulled from the water at Danson Park, near Welling, south-east London on Wednesday, has been named by the Metropolitan Police as Stephen Cavanagh.

They warned of more disruption expected including power-outages and blocked roads.

Advising those travelling to check the status of their flight with their airline, the airport stressed to passengers "not to travel to the airport if it is cancelled".

Motorists across much of the United Kingdom have been warned against driving unless absolutely essential amid icy conditions and poor visibility, with Lincolnshire police describing travel on "most roads" as impossible.

The Met Office said the highest temperature in the United Kingdom on Wednesday was 1.7C recorded in Katesbridge, County Down and the coldest in Braemar, Aberdeenshire at -5.3C.

It looks set to be another snow day for thousands of school children as school closures take place across England, Scotland and Wales as a result of the Beast from the East.
