Former recruiter sues Google, says white and Asian candidates were 'purged'

  • According to a lawsuit filed by former Google engineer Loretta Lee the tech giant’s ‘bro-culture’ lead to routine sexual harassment and lewd comments at work

Last spring, YouTube recruiters were allegedly instructed to cancel interviews with applicants who weren't female, black or Hispanic, and to "purge entirely" the applications of people who didn't fit those categories, the lawsuit claims. The suit reportedly claims that his employment was terminated after he complained to human resources that Google discriminated against white and Asian men in favor of applicants who were Hispanic, African American or female.

The court documents recount alleged conversations wherein several employees complained to Google managers about the company's diversity hiring practices.

Wilberg also alleges some of his former co-workers were uncomfortable with one of Google's hiring initiatives, "Project Mirror", which required current employees to interview job candidates of the same race and sex.

A former YouTube employee is suing parent company Google, for which he worked for a total of nine years, alleging that he was sacked for refusing to adhere to hiring practices that discriminated against white and Asian males.

Further, she stated that the company is not hesitant in accepting that they look for a diverse pool of qualified candidates for open roles, and this helps them in hiring the best people, improve culture and build better products.

A former YouTube employee has filed a discrimination suit against the world's largest video site, alleging that its policy was to hire zero white or Asian men for tech positions. They then mentioned that Google's racial and gender preferences in hiring were not up for debate, because this was morally and economically the best thing to do for Google. Both federal and California anti-discrimination laws prohibit employers from making hiring decisions based on race or gender.

What do you think of Wilberg's lawsuit?

Google has been training its employees how to recognize unconscious bias, but Damore's memo is proof that diversity is not always seen as part of Google's cultural values. Many have adopted policies and programs created to encourage more balanced hiring, not only to right past discrimination but for their own economic advantage: According to management consultancy McKinsey, diverse companies deliver better financial results.

United States companies from beer brewer MillerCoors to candymaker Hershey Co., which use aluminum for manufacturing and packaging, said operations would be hurt by the tariffs.

In January a woman named Heidi Lamar sued the company on charges that women working as preschool teachers in Google's child care center were paid lower salaries than male counterparts who had fewer qualifications. In a way, Google even popularized the idea of transparency around diversity numbers as a defensive tactic against claims about systemic inequality.
