  • As the crowd cheers former Mariner Ichiro Suzuki now a Marlins right fielder trots toward home plate after hitting a homerun in the ninth inning

The Mariners' injuries include first baseman Ryon Healy's hand, outfielder Mitch Haniger's hand and pitcher Felix Hernandez's forearm.

It's been over five years since Ichiro Suzuki last wore No. 51 for the Seattle Mariners, but that is reportedly about to change.

The Mariners open the 2018 season at home March, 29., vs the Cleveland Indians.

The Mariners were hopeful that Gamel would miss only a few days but an MRI revealed a more extensive injury after it was reviewed by team physicians. Another returning outfielder, Guillermo Heredia, is coming off shoulder surgery and is being worked in slowly. He has a good relationship with Dee Gordon and David Phelps.

Ichiro may not have much left in the tank - he hit only.255/.318/.332 in 2017 - but he's healthy and still wants to play in the bigs. He has a career.221 average with 31 homers and 117 RBIs and a 2.8 WAR.

Numerous free agent outfielders are unsigned, including Melky Cabrera, 33, but they are likely seeking more than one-year deals. Previous year at Milwaukee he had 26 ABs and hit.115.

The future Hall of Famer has spent the majority of his 17-year major-league career with the Mariners.

Of course, there is an actual baseball reason for the move. Oh, and he won Rookie of the Year and American League MVP in the same year, it's whatever. The Mariners dealt him to the Yankees in the middle of the 2012 season.
