Barbie releases dolls honoring role models ahead of International Women's Day

"Now more than ever, it's really important to have strong, powerful role models, especially for the younger generation growing up; and I think International Women's Day really represents that".
United States toymaker Mattel on Wednesday unveiled a new line of Barbie dolls based on accomplished women that include USA snowboarder Chloe Kim, Australian conservationist Bindi Irwin, and Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.
One of the best things about this collection is that it appeals to girls all around the world.
Johnson, who is 99, reportedly worked closely with Mattel to make sure the doll looked like her.
International Women's Day 2018 is on Thursday 8 March.
And to continue the rad female role models trend, the Barbie brand has also revealed additions to their Shero program.
Ballerina Misty Copeland, gymnast Gabby Douglas and "A Wrinkle in Time" director Ava DuVernay have already been included in the "Shero" line.
Lisa McKnight, Senior Vice President and General Manager, put out an official statement about their decision to honor these role models.
The dolls are coming out in honour of International Women's Day tomorrow, Barbie has noted, and they have said on Twitter that "we are committed to shining a light on empowering female role models past and present in an effort to inspire more girls". Most noticeably, many are calling out the portrayal of Frida Kahlo.
