Technical glitch hits Sydney airport, delaying flights

A technical problem hit the air hub of Australia's New South Wales state capital on Friday, when flight delays left crowds of global and domestic passengers stranded for hours, according to Sydney airport authorities.

The other domestic terminal, T3, is operated by Qantas and did not experience the same issue.

Jetstar expects all their flights will be back on schedule by midday, after its morning flights were delayed by an hour on average.

"We are experiencing outbound delays while we fix this technical issue which we're working to rectify as quickly as we can", she said.

The IT issue means that passengers are not able to proceed through security, the delays have hit early morning travelers in the T1 and T2 terminals hard, leaving hundreds stranded.

Officials are urging any passengers who planned to fly from Sydney airport today to call their airline and/or check their flight time and status online. We're advising passengers and visitors to avoid T1 and T2 until further notice, ' the statement read.

Security screening was closed for 30 minutes at the airport as federal police investigated the matter.

All planes yet to take off were instructed to disembark so passengers could be re-screened.

At around 7:45AM Sydney Airport Tweeted that it was once again processing passengers in the affected terminals.
