Manafort pleaded not guilty in a Virginia courtroom to charges ranging from bank fraud to filing false tax returns that were brought by Robert Mueller, the United States special counsel for the Russian Federation probe.
"You need to go back to the optometrist", the judge replied, and ordered the Virginia trial to begin July 10.
On February 28 Manafort, 68, also pleaded not guilty in a Washington court to charges of money laundering, illegal lobbying and lying, setting up the first trial to result from Mueller's investigation.
The charges were brought as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into possible collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign.
Manafort's lawyer, Kevin Downing, said his "rosy glasses" hope was it would not begin until November, or after the Washington trial presumably had ended. Another trial on federal charges in Washington D.C.is scheduled to begin on September 17 and likely to stretch for several weeks.
Separately Thursday, an April 4 hearing was scheduled before a federal judge in Washington in Manafort's civil lawsuit challenging Mueller's appointment as special counsel, which the government has moved to dismiss. Jurors will hear from 20 to 25 witnesses over a trial that will last eight to 10 days, prosecutors said. In June 2017, when Manafort registered as a foreign agent after the fact, he reported making more than $17 million from the Party of Regions.
In Virginia, Manafort is accused of hiding foreign bank accounts, falsifying his income taxes, and failing to report foreign bank accounts.
In the DC charges alone, Manafort faces a likely sentence of more than 15 years to nearly 20 years in prison if found guilty.
