The Bhartiya Janata Party on Wednesday shifted Finance Minister Arun Jaitley from Gujarat to Uttar Pradesh and Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan from Bihar to Madhya Pradesh in the first list of its nine candidates in the ensuing Rajya Sabha elections, all of whom are retiring members, including eight union ministers.

Following a poorer show in Gujarat Assembly polls, the BJP chose to shift Finance Minister to Uttar Pradesh for a safer entry into the Rajya Sabha.

Minister of State for Agriculture Parshottam Rupala and Minister of State for Chemical and Fertiliser Mansukh Bhai Mandaviya have been renominated from Gujarat. Four seats each will go to elections from Gujarat and Karnataka; three each from Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, and Rajasthan; two from Jharkhand; and one seat each from Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. The Congress has now decided field Pitroda from Gujarat.

In the state Assembly polls, the BJP's tally reduced to 99 in 2017 from 115 in 2012, while the Congress managed to increase its numbers to 77 from the previous 60.

Given the majority of the BJD in the Assembly, where it has 117 members in 147-member House, it wouldn't be hard for ruling party nominees to make it to the upper house of parliament. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah rejected the high command's candidate, Sam Pitroda stating that it would be better to elect a local from the state in view of the upcoming Karnataka Assembly Elections 2018. Congress state chief, Bharat Sinh Solanki could file nomination for the second seat. There will be a tough contest for the fourth seat between the Congress and the JDS.
