  • Matt Wallace and Shubhankar Sharma share lead going into final round of Indian Open

Johnston fired a bogey-free 66 at DLF Golf and Country Club to set the clubhouse target at 11 under, which overnight joint-leader Wallace joined by closing out a four-under 68.

Wallace now has a European Tour exemption through the 2019 season.

It was heartbreak for Shubhankar Sharma on the final day as he struggled to a three-over 75 to finish tied seventh even as Englishman Matt Wallace bagged his second European Tour title at the United States dollars 1,750,000 Hero Indian Open in New Delhi on Sunday.

"I played great", Wallace was quoted by the European Tour.

"I played great", Wallace said. I'm going to draw from my experiences last week. It has been very satisfying week because it is definitely the toughest golf course that I have played in my career. Johnston fought back strongly on the back nine and when Wallace bogeyed the hard par-3 18th, "Beef" was in the battle.

Wallace, who stayed in contention throughout the week, overcame compatriot Andrew Johnston in the play-off, 18th hole, to clinch his first Indian Open title and take home the winner's cheque of Dollars 291,660.

"There are some great champions".

India thus failed to retain the trophy for the first time in four years after SSP Chawrasia won it twice in 2015 and 2016 and Anirban Lahiri bagged it in 2015. I will hit a few bad shots and I understand that it's all part of the game. Sharma, who broke the course record on Friday with an eight-under-par 64, saw his challenge disintegrate as he registered a three-over 75 which contained three double-bogeys, three further dropped shots and six birdies.

Little disappointed with the way things ended, Johnston said: I was happy to be able to put up a good score and force a play-off.

Despite his lacklustre show, Sharma continues to lead the European Tour Race to Dubai and the Asian Order of Merit. "I was most nervous on 16th tee, the second shot, I hit it bunker on the downslope".

Beef made it a three-shot hole to set up a lengthy birdie bid.

Co-leader Wallace, whose second straight 70 included and eagle at the par-4 9th, is expecting another hard day Sunday but relishes the challenge. In the end, I just want to play good golf. on Sunday's an example of that. "There is a lot of work in front of me because I don't think I am anywhere close to my best golf", he wrote. I am sure he knows as well as anyone playing this game at the highest level, that golf tournaments are never won over two days - it is how you perform over four days that counts.
