  • Sky are set for talks with Carragher who has apologised to the 14-year-old girl

A leading TV soccer pundit, who was an England worldwide and played for English Premier League club Liverpool, has been suspended by British broadcaster Sky Sports after footage emerged of him spitting at a couple of Manchester United fans.

The spitting incident was filmed by a Manchester United supporter from his vehicle as he drove alongside Carragher on the way home from Saturday's game, gently poking fun at the former Liverpool defender in the wake of the result.

"Sky takes this matter extremely seriously and strongly condemns Jamie's actions", said a statement.

It added they had "made that clear to him in person" and "suspended him".

'It falls well below the standards we expect of our people'.

Danish broadcaster TV3 has also dropped Carragher from their coverage of Manchester United's Champions League tie against Sevilla on Tuesday.

The revolting video where Carragher can be seen spitting mouthful of frustrated contempt was shot by the girl's father.

Carragher had initially told The Mirror: "It was a bit more than, "Hiya Jamie, it was 2-1".

Why is spitting so bad?

The former Reds captain issued an apology on Sunday night, admitting he "lost his rag" after being goaded over Liverpool's 2-1 defeat on his journey home from the game.

"It's devastating for the family involved and I'm sorry for my actions", he said.

"I called the family".

"That's the biggest regret, obviously I've lots of regrets from what happened, but the biggest is for the 14-year-old girl".

'That devastates me more than anything. The young girl was sat back and reclined in the chair and she was in the line of fire. "I've got a daughter exactly the same age and I can't say how I'd react if someone did that to her".

"I asked whether this was anything to with the fact that they hate each other's guts but Diouf said it was his moral compass that forced him to ring in".

Will he stay on as as a Sky pundit?

The former Liverpool defender turned pundit has since apologised for his behaviour on multiple occasions. But it's only context - it doesn't make it right and I'm not justifying it.

It is ironic that Carragher resorted to such vile behavior when he himself used to look down upon footballers who spat at one another.
