"A piece of material has a life".

The third request from the couturier was to borrow the emerald green dress and short jacket which he had designed for Princess Grace of Monaco and which she wore when she visited President John Kennedy and his wife Jackie in May 1961. The news was broken to the world by his family, who announced it today through a French news agency. At 24, he introduced separates with his first couture collection, items that could be mixed and matched.

"Audrey's style came with a really different silhouette, really of the moment", Givenchy said of his muse, who he dressed right up to her death in 1993.

His label, according to BBC, said Monday: "Hubert de Givenchy was a symbol of Parisian elegance for more than half a century".

In 1969, the designer launched a menswear line called Givenchy Gentleman. In 1952, he went on his own and set up shop at the famed Plaine Monceau in Paris. He retired in 1995 after staying on as head of creative design for seven years.

"It was...an enormous help to know that I looked the part", began Hepburn, some time ago.

"Not only was he one of the most influential fashion figures of our time, whose legacy still influences modern day dressing", wrote.

Bernard Arnault, chairman and CEO of LVMH Group, also released a statement on the company's website, expressing his sympathies and praising the late designer.
