Apple Music has reached 38 million paid subscribers, up from 36 million in February.

During his appearance at the SXSW conference in Austin Texas, Apple Music's SVP, Eddy Cue, revealed the new numbers to the audience.

Of its 159-million total customers, its premium users grew 46% in 2017 to 71-million, according to Spotify's filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

South Africans already have a wide choice of streaming options, from Google Play Music to Apple Music, and Simfy Africa to Deezer.

The premium service launched at ZAR59.99 (around $5) per month, with it matching prices set by competitors like Apple Music. Apple and Google charge $9.99 per month for their respective services, while Amazon offers theirs for $7.99 to Prime members.

The platform has a free version, which is supported with advertising, and a premium one, which is available for a subscription of Euro 4.99 per month. Spotify free allows users to listen to free music forever, but at the expense of ads popping up.

Cue also said Apple Music, a service where users can select music on demand, has 8 million users on three month free trials - the first time Apple has disclosed trial figures. Texture hasn't specified how many subscribers it has, but CEO John Loughlin said in a 2016 interview that the number ranged in the "hundreds of thousands".

Speaking at SXSW, Cue said the Texture acquisition is part of the company's Apple News venture to curate quality journalism content from trusted sources.

Unlike most Apple products, Texture will be available on devices powered by Google's Android software in addition to the iPhone and iPad.

Spotify have moved one step closer to streaming music to the entire world going live in 3 new countries. Of course, there is also the free tier.
