  • The telecoms regulator blamed excessive use of Facebook and other popular social media platforms for distracting students from their studies

On 26 March, Facebook's director of product partnerships Ime Archibong made public the social network's intention to reward researchers for spotting instances of data misuse by app developers. Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg is expected to testify before Congress next month.

"We are disappointed that the New Zealand privacy commissioner asked us to provide access to a year's worth of private data belonging to several people and then criticised us for protecting their privacy". The advertisers on Facebook themselves have their own compilation of user information.

It questioned whether the company or its related or downstream agencies utilising the data on the social media platform have previously been engaged by any entity "to manipulate the Indian electoral process". Facebook has also made it easier to download all the information that users have uploaded to the website.

Yet mobile users still had to go to almost 20 different places to access all of their privacy controls.

The change in the settings menu is earlier a user find many pages for menu and now the same menu is located on a single screen.

The company explained these changes by noting how the "last week showed how much more work we need to do to enforce our policies and help people understand how Facebook works and the choices they have over their data". Vladeck, the Georgetown professor, see he expects "some sort of an agreement between the FTC and Facebook which will call for very serious financial civil penalties, and a new consent decree that will ratchet up the restrictions on the way Facebook gathers information".

Facebook collected metadata - information about the date, time, phone number and duration of a text or call, but not the content itself - from Android smartphone users who connected their phone contacts to the Facebook or Messenger apps. They may also delete anything from their timeline or profile using this tab.

As for whether the changes to Facebook's data-sharing practices will help it comply with the GDPR, the devil will be in the detail, though the changes should reduce Facebook's liability if those third-party data brokers got their data in a way that doesn't comply with the law.

Facebook's terms of service and data policy are being updated to improve transparency about how the site collects and uses information, according to Beringer and Egan. The rules are created to make it easier for consumers to give and withdraw consent for the use of their data.
