  • Die Steven Bochco, creator of ' Sad Song of Hill Street ', 74 years old

Steven Bochco, the television writer and producer behind hit shows "NYPD Blue", "L.A. Law" and "Hill Street Blues", has died at the age of 74. He battled studio executives and censors. The son of a violinist and a painter, he went to the High School of Music and Art in Manhattan with an eye towards a career as a singer. He attended NYU and subsequently Carnegie Institute of Technology, receiving a degree in theater. Bochco received a fellowship from MCA, and worked for Universal TV during the summers.

Bochco started out as a writer and story editor on series like Ironside and The Invisible Man. Rest well, sir. You will be missed", and Joss Whedom said, "Absolutely one of the biggest influences on Buffy (and me) was HILL STREET BLUES.

On Monday, dozens of actors and showrunners shared their condolences on Twitter, with House Of Cards creator Beau Willimon writing: "As a kid, Hill Street Blues and L.A. Law were rituals in my house". They probably wouldn't exist without the realistic grit and sprawling ensembles established in Hill Street Blues, which would receive 98 Emmy nominations over its seven-season run, or L.A. Law and NYPD Blue.

A transplant in late 2014 was credited with prolonging Bochco's his life.

Steven Spielberg, a close friend and colleague of Bochco's, said in a statement to Entertainment Weekly, "Steve was a friend and a colleague starting with the first episode of Columbo in 1971 that he wrote and I directed". NYPD Blue, which premiered in the fall of 1993, introduced nudity and explicit language. His ABC series Murder One focused on one complicated investigation over a 23-episode season, freeing shows like The Killing and True Detective to delve deeper into investigations.

Elsewhere in television, Bochco created the CBS police drama Paris, led by James Earl Jones. 1990's Cop Rock lasted only 11 episodes while 1983's Bay City Blues lasted for only 4 episodes. "The DNA for quality drama at NBC was created by Steven Bochco and all of broadcasting would join NBC and covet what Steven was capable of doing".

Bochco's legacy could be felt in the tributes that rolled in following his death.

Bochco was married three times, the first time to Gabrielle Levin.

Hill Street Blues had a sprawling universe of engaging yet flawed characters, a zippy pace and layers of overlapping, scripted dialogue, shot in a documentary style.

Bochco is survived by his sister Joanna Frank; his wife Dayna; his children Jesse, Sean, and Melissa; and a number of grandchildren.
