  • Current NZ coach Darren Smith says his team would love to beat his predecessor Colin Batch who now coaches Australia

Laurel Hubbard, 40, was leading the women's +90kg category but when she attempted a Games-record snatch of 132kg, her left elbow agonisingly gave way.Gold medal favourite Hubbard, the first transgender athlete to compete at the Games, said she thought she may have ruptured a ligament in her elbow.

"Crying my eyes out watch Laurel Hubbard, I wish I could share some of this pressure with her", tweeted dual-international athlete and transgender activist Kirsti Miller.

"Until we have further scanning, we won't know the details".

"And I know a lot of changes have gone through, but in the past Laurel Hubbard used to be a male champion weightlifter".

"I was out back with her and my gut was to not go for the heavier weight, but she looked me in the eye and said, 'No no no, I want the 132, ' and I wasn't going to say no to her".

Despite doing everything she could do to prove she deserved her place in the event, Hubbard was forced to endure repeated attempts to stop her from taking part.

Mr Grevemberg said team New Zealand has done tremendous work to protect Hubbard's welfare during the controversy, but said the weightlifting community needed to discuss how to better manage these issues.

Described as an "introverted character" by New Zealand's weightlifting high-performance director Simon Kent, Hubbard admitted she had anxious about the crowd's reaction prior to competition.

"I have no regrets about the attempts that I made, because I believe that to be true to sport you really have to try to be the best that you can".

But by being a prominent lifter - she won silver at last year's world championships - Hubbard became a focus for the argument, as people took sides.

I have absolute certainty that Hubbard did not transition simply to win weightlifting medals.

At Carrara Sports Arena, Hubbard was second only to Australia's Deb Lovely-Acason in terms of crowd popularity when the athletes were introduced.

"Twelve months as a policy for everyone is just the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard in my life".

Hubbard's withdrawal paved the way for Stowers to claim the gold with a combined total of 253kg, ahead of Nauruan lifter Charisma Amoe-Tarrant (243) and England's Emily Campbell (242).

It follows similar criticism from Australian weightlifting chief Mike Keelan.

Commentators have been shocked by the damage with Kiwi sporting identities pushing for Hubbard to hold the Kiwi flag into the closing ceremony earlier within the week.

Despite this, Hubbard put on another 3kg for a 130kg hoist for her next lift.
